Important: AHAH Prescription Protocol per DEA

As of September 2023, our protocols regarding controlled substance prescriptions has changed.

What is a controlled substance?

Controlled Substances are chemicals, pharmaceutical agents, etc., that have been identified by the United States Department of Justice/Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as having the potential for abuse.

How do I know if my pet’s prescription medication is controlled?

Controlled substances prescribed at Arlington Heights Animal Hospital include:

– Alprazolam
– Tramadol
– Tussigon (Hydrocodone)
– Phenobarbitol
– Buprenorphine oral solution
– Gabapentin *

*Not currently regulated as a controlled substance by the DEA, however this medication will be handled with the same refill requirements at our office.

How often does my pet need to be seen by an Arlington Heights Animal Hospital veterinarian to continue on his/her controlled substance prescription?

Due to DEA regulations, all pets that are on a controlled substance are now required to have an exam with a doctor every 6 months and lab work every 3-6 months depending on the medication/patient history.

What if my pet needs a refill of his/her controlled substance medication?

Controlled medication can only be dispensed in a 30-60 day quantity and can be refilled no sooner than 5 days prior to running out. Please provide at least a 72 hour window for your medication to be filled and ready for you to pick up. If you do run out and your pet is due for an exam, we can refill enough to get to that appointment, but not to exceed 5 days worth of medication.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in helping us follow the regulations as set by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As always, our goal is to offer the best veterinarian care for your pet. Please contact our office at 817-735-8700 option 1 with any questions.

With warm regards,

Arlington Heights Animal Hospital
